Feeling ridiculous somhow sums up to feeling ruined and making someone ridiculous is almost equivalent to giving to their "Me" a lethal attack that no other offense would equal. On another hand, being hated by all except one's own is a desirable state, or even enviable. Such general animosity would not cause the death of the "Me" but on the contrary ; would fill it with a feeling of bravado that would allow it to survive for centuries long and to proclaim its anger in front of a world of hatred. But having neither friend nor even enemy, this is the genuine hell in which a thinking being experiences the torments of progressive anihilation through all its forms.


Se sentir ridicule revient en quelque sorte à se sentir anéanti et rendre quelqu'un ridicule équivaut presque à porter à son Moi une atteinte mortelle qu'aucune autre offense ne saurait égaler. En revanche, être haï de tous excepté de soi-même est un état souhaitable, voire désirable. Une telle détestation générale n'entraînerait pas la mort du Moi, au contraire : elle l'emplirait d'un sentiment de bravade qui lui permettrait de survivre des siècles durant et de clamer sa colère face à un monde de haine. Mais n'avoir pas d'ami ni même d'ennemi, voilà l'enfer véritable dans lequel un être pensant éprouve les tourments de l'anéantissement progressif sous toutes leurs formes.
